A Journey on The Ocean Sleeper Train: From Halifax to Quebec

First train to Quebec

We headed to the train station at Halifax excited to be on our first train of the holiday and one where we had a sleeper cabin. We checked in and were pointed to the lounge for passengers with a sleeper cabin, it was very nice and we had a tea and coffee but then opened the fridge to see it full of fizzy drinks and juice so we happily stocked up for the journey. Luckily we did as passengers after us also had the same idea and the fridge was soon depleted. We got on the train and our cabin although small is fine, the chairs move so we can both be facing the window and enjoy the scenery. We we are ready for bed we let the attendant know who comes and sets up the bunks

The Great Service Car Seat Showdown

As the cabin is a bit small we decide to have a wander and sit in the lounge coaches. These aren't that big with limited seating and the seat we can find already has a book and mobile phone on the table. We sit there anyway leaving room for the owner if she had just popped away. About 50 minutes later she comes back and seems quite angry with us. We both move up to make space for her but she tersely tells us she left her stuff there so she and her friends could keep the table. We decided not to engage and she stomped off, noisily banging her stuff and tutting because she had to relocate to a smaller table behind us. Rail rage.....I know sunbed wars exist but table wars on a trains lol. If your going to disappear then you lose your seat.

The rest of the journey goes well, the food is okay, all pre-made. We find it surprisingly easy to sleep although quite cramped. I think the train rhythm definitely helps us sleep.

A Stay at La Chattau Faubourg

Arriving in Quebec City we head to our hotel to drop our bags off. The hotel is quite unique; lots of antiques and interesting paintings. The owner lets us leave our bags there and at 8am we're ready to explore.

The city is vert interesting, with a very European vibe. Lots on interesting buildings and again plenty of things set up for halloween.

Exploring the Citadel: The Tough Way

We walked up to the citadel and took the tough route! An indirect and hilly route which felt like a work-out but that might be due to our lifestyle on the trip so far! Once there we decide its a must to have a look around. As it is a current barracks the only way you can do this is on a guided tour. Our guide, Fiona, was mad. So despite the citadel/fort never having seen a battle she made the hour incredibly interesting. Mixing stories of the fort and the regiment in with her own impersonations, dancing and singing! We then walked backed into the city and discovered the correct way in and out was a road and a gentle slope!

Giant Lampshade Street and Other Surprises

After our Citadel adventure, we wandered around town. One fun spot was the famed Giant Lampshade Street — a quirky installation that takes you completely by surprise. And just when we thought we had seen it all! Out of nowhere, giant jelly babies seemed to dangle from the trees like a scene from a strange film. It was an odd but delightful reminder of how creativity flourishes in this stunning town.

Quebec seems to be lovely city and quite different to what else we've seen in Canada, looking forward to seeing more tomorrow.
