Apollo Bay to Port Campbell

A Rainy Morning, Apollo Bay

It seems the Australians regard 1st March as the start of Autumn, and it only took until the 2nd for us to wake up to a cloudy and wet day. Karen declined a morning walk so I walked along the beach on my own. Luckily I had my berghaus.

In the afternoon it brightened up so went to watch the live music, just a duo playing covers but a nice way to spend an hour. We also took the chance to use the site's wifi to book some flights for later in the trip, sadly including the flight back home on 20th July.

The Pisces campsite was more expensive than others so far but I think worth for the extra facilities and general posh-ness.

The Journey to Port Campbell

We set off from Apollo Bay to Port Campbell and made an early stop at Wildlife Wonders. This a wildlife centre and you pay for a 90 minute guided tour. The area includes coast, grassland and eucalyptus forests we saw kangaroos, emus, koalas, long nosed potteroos, wallabies (swamp and red shoulder), pademelons and more noisy silver crested cockatoos. The guide was really knowledgeable and a good group of people.

After this we set off and made our usual stops for lookout points and the compulsory lighthouse. This was Cape Otway lighthouse the most southerly in Oz so often the first thing of the country ships from England would see. Driving to the lighthouse we spotted other koalas up in eucalyptus tree and also saw masses of these trees which were now dead and just white trunks and branches. Apparently due to the bears eating everything else on the tree.

We drove past the 12 Apostles but as we plan a cycle ride tomorrow didn't stop. As today as gone on it has got much warmer so hoping for nice weather for the cycle ride.

Back to Basic with Port Campbell

The campsite tonight is Port Campbell Recreation Park. It is a bit more Matthew than Karen as looks quite basic but again provides power, water and a wash block. It is on a much smaller scale than the ones we have been stopping at.
