It’s just after 4 AM here in Chicago on the 30th,and I’m wide awake, ready to start the day…if only my body clock could catch up to U.S. time!
After months of planning, the moment has finally arrived—my first proper blog post. Saying goodbye to family was emotional, but we know we’ll stay in touch regularly online.
The journey kicked off in style with a business class flight across the Atlantic, a fantastic way to begin this adventure.
We’ve arrived in the USA! Day one was all about getting our bearings in the local area. Our hotel has a stunning view of Millennium Park, and we’re just a short walk from the iconic Bean sculpture.
As expected, there are plenty of quirks to get used to here. A couple of things caught my attention right away:
1. Public restroom doors: Why on earth do U.S. public toilet doors have a gap all around the edges? I really don’t need to see people waiting outside, and they definitely don’t need to see me!
2. Pricing surprises: Remember, the price you see isn’t the price you pay—sales tax is added afterward. And tips? They’re expected almost everywhere! We bought a can of Coke in the park, and the vendor who handed it over from the fridge asked for a tip. Sorry, I’m English—I might be a bit frugal, but after paying $4.40, I’m not about to add more!
