Discovering Kauai

Kauai, no expense incurred

After a slightly disappointing tour from Honolulu, we decided to do our own thing, on the second Hawaiin island we visited, Kauai. It also happened to be the cheaper option.

We walked off the boat and headed to the nearby Kalapaki beach as we got there it was sunny and hot. Our plan was for me to walk a bit as I'd seen two lighthouses reasonably close, and Karen could stay on the beach. However, after a few minutes of walking it started to rain, I called Karen who joined me for the walk. As soon as we set off the sun came out again but Karen decided to do the walk anyway.

Lighthouses of Kauai

The first lighthouse was a small one and involved walking next to a golf course and directly behind a green, luckily no golfers about so we made it there and back.

On the way to second lighthouse, we went through an area where they were building some luxury houses. We saw a couple assessing a site where we imagine they will be having a weekend pad built. The area was pretty decent, luxury hotels, the golf club, tennis club, an amazing green lagoon plus right next to the ocean.

The second lighthouse is under the flight path to the airport. We did get some photos of planes coming in but we're unfortunately at the wrong time for the best angle.

Say Aloha to Kauai's Chickens!

We saw lots of the wild chickens on our walk, apparently during a big storm in the last 90s, I think they said the hurricane in 1992, the chicken coops were destroyed and the islanders were busy sorting their own homes which meant that a lot of domestic chickens remained wild and have increased massively in numbers over the years. They are now ferrel and protected from being killed/eaten.

Back on the boat

Back on the boat we went to the comedy night, it was an Australian comedian Sam McCool. He was okay but not that great. The craziest thing we heard though was a American guy in front of us who talking about an earlier cruise he'd been on where he stayed on board as he 'didn't want to visit those 3rd world countries of Mexico and Costa Rica!"

We have a few days now on the ship before we visit Fiji. Need to catch up with the washing and intend to continue with the exercise classes. I also need one more win of he table tennis competition to be a 3 time champion!

Also enjoying the wildlife been watching some big sea birds diving for fish, looking at Google think these are Albatross. We've also seen the top of a whale and the spout of air and water shooting up. We weren't sure what type of whale it was.

Last night was movie night under the stars which we enjoyed while drinking Guinness. It's great watching a film and, as well as seeing the stars, every know and then feeling the spray of the ocean.
