Starting the Journey: Tucumcari to Albuquerque
The drive from Tucumcari to Albuquerque is a delightful blend of scenic beauty and interesting stopovers. Whether you're a road trip enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing getaway, this drive has something for everyone. It’s all about taking it slow, soaking in the sights, and enjoying the journey.
A Pitstop at the Car Museum
About halfway through your journey, make sure to visit the Route 66 car museum. This local gem offers a fascinating glimpse into automotive history, featuring vintage cars and memorabilia that will captivate any car enthusiast. There is a small 5 dollar entrance fee PP. It's a perfect place to stretch your legs and indulge in some nostalgia, picking our your favourite vintage car (mine was a 1956 Buick and Matthew was a Datsun ZX280) . Spend an hour or two here, and you'll have plenty of time to reach Albuquerque by evening.
Notes/observation for today -
there are loads of restrooms (toilets) in the USA and they are all clean and free. Complete opposite of the UK. We could learn a thing or two from across the pond.
drivers are generally very polite. Way more than the UK. No tail-gaiting. No road rage observed, except occasional honk. People stick to speed limits (mostly). One thing we can work out - if its a multi lane highway why drive in the outside lanes when no other cars around ?? I can be on a 2 lane road and overtake people on the right and I'm like WTF, why are you in the (what would be to me) the fast/overtaking lane.
we have soon got used to the turning right on red rule. However, it does throw you sometimes as its not all the junctions but you have to watch for the signs. I'm sure I have turned when I shouldn't have.
4 way stop signs. I've no idea who has the right of way first. Everyone stops and its a battle of the wills to see who goes. I'm just creeping and and hitting the peddle and praying nothing hits me. I just don't get them. Especially when they are in random places in the middle of nowhere. Yields are even more scary and confusing.
Venturing Down Frontage Roads
Route 66 has taken us down a lot of frontage roads which a new thing to us. These roads run parallel to the interstate and offer unique sights that you wouldn't encounter on the main route (plus no big trucks). They often lead you through charming small towns and picturesque landscapes, making your drive even more memorable. You can drive for miles without coming across another vehicle. Can be quite sad as well though as lots of towns that have become ghost towns and lots of derelict buildings etc.
Yesterday, I spotted a massive spider (I think it must have been a tarantula) just making its way across the road.
Relaxing at the Imperial Motel
After a day on the road, nothing beats relaxing stop at a nice motel. The Imperial Motel is an excellent choice for an stay in Albuquerque. The place was refurbed this year and first impressions are wow, especially when we spotted the pool. We've decided to bask in the sun and enjoy a refreshing dip in the motel's swimming pool. Tomorrow is a do nothing sort of day. Catch up on laundry etc. It's a perfect place to recharge.
The drive from Tucumcari to Albuquerque is more than just a trip; it’s a mini-adventure filled with unique experiences, scenic views, and plenty of relaxation. So pack your bags, hit the road, and enjoy the ride!
