Exploring Arizona: My Scenic Journey from New Mexico to Arizona

Setting Off Towards Winslow
We set off from Holbrook, sad to be leaving the Wigwam accommodation behind but glad to be away from possibly the nosiest air conditioning unit ever, it sounded like a plane landing every 15 minutes.
Our first stop was Winslow and a 9/11 memorial. It was quite impressive and moving. As well as 2 iron girders from the New York site, it had a series of small flags. I think one for each person who died and the flag denoted the nationality. These flags created the shape of the twin towers as well as a Pentagon shaped area with no flags in the middle. I think when the US don't go over the top they do these sort of things well. As we've been driving we're followed the Purple Heart trail and the Native American Veteran trail nothing over done just signs to ensure people remember.
Our next stop in Winslow was less serious and based around the fact that Jackson Brown once broke down while driving through the nearby town of Flagstaff. He used this experience to add some lyrics to the song he was writing for the Eagles, Take it Easy. The lyrics were Standing on the Corner in Winslow and about a girl checking him out! Not sure how that justifies the 2 two statues and everything else in Winslow but I'm glad it did as I had a delicious strawberry milkshake whilst we were there. It also made me think Norfolk should have a David Bowie statue for Life On Mars due to the lyrics "From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads".
Just to add, we are both writing the blog. Guess who's entry this is?
A Stop at Meteor Crater
One of the highlights of our journey today was the majestic Meteor Crater. This place is an incredible testament to our planet’s history, as the impact site is a staggering 50,000 years old! The crater is massive and on a really windy day quite nerve wracking. The scientist who first made a lot of discoveries about it worked there before we knew too much about meteors and how they burned up before hitting the earth. It made me chuckle that he spent a lot of time looking for the meteor or bits of it, evening tunnelling 100 feet under the crater to find it there. A really interesting place and the corniest 4D experience you're ever likely to experience, as you can imagine we loved it!
Adventures with Broken Windshield Wipers
As we were driving today the driver's side windscreen wiper flew off. We have one more day of travelling with this car so hoping for no rain, although the bugs will have to build up. We are ready for an argument with Thrifty Car Hire over who has to pay for it. We may regret going for the cheapest car hire as the reviews we've read over their customer service aren't five star.....
Reflection
As we got into Arizona the scenery has changed again especially approaching the Grand Canyon the rocks are incredible. Amazes me as we drive along we have been over 7000 feet high at times and regularly at 6000 feet plus.
Our lodging tonight is sort of a chalet/cabin and has amazing views. If we can stay up we plan to do some stay gazing.
