Exploring Santa Barbara

Welcome to Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, often referred to as the American Riviera, is a coastal gem in California that perfectly combines stunning scenery with delightful experiences. This charming city promises a kind of magic that's hard to resist. One of the best ways to soak in the atmosphere is to take a lovely promenade and beach walk along the shores, where the gentle sea breeze will instantly lift your spirits.
Strolling the Scenic Promenade
During the mornings this week there has been a coastal fog that hangs around but burns off by lunch. It does provide some spectacular views. Whenever we've been on the coast we can see mountains so really nice.
On the drive down here we had noticed gas to be more expensive but still managed to got ripped off. We stopped by a station where a bike gang were filling up. It was only after we realised it was about a dollar more than other stations. We assumed it would be a good price if bikers were using...oops.
Taking our time down the West coast has meant we have been able to detour and take random roads and routes. We have really enjoyed meandering around little coastal towns and looking at all the houses/ estates etc. Some are totally amazing, balancing on cliffs with spectacular views, oh how the other half live.
We have also noticed in the US lots of solar farms but not many on the actual houses? I wonder why? If the electric cheap already? We use solar at home for heating and water and it makes a big difference to our bills and that's from the sun in the UK. We are surprised there aren't more as in Europe they are on nearly every roof.
As you stroll down the beachfront in Santa Barbara there aren't not many people around so nice and peaceful. The weather is lovely so not sure where everyone is. I know schools back but we are still surprised by how few people are around. As we were walking along a couple walked passed and commented "We live in Norwich". before carrying on. Matthew had his Norwich football shirt on and typical of people from Norfolk - that was the end of the conversation. Totally unlike Americans who will chat away and unlike Northerners from the UK who say how-do/ey up cock to anyone and everyone you pass by and then if they find you've from Sheffield as well will spend the next half hour working out people you both know.
We had a wander down the old school wooden pier which add a dash of character to the breath taking views of the ocean. We were surprised that cars are allowed on there as some serious H&S flaws. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, coupled with (very loud) train whistles from the Amtrak train gleefully cruising through the centre of town, creates a serene, yet lively atmosphere that is distinctly Santa Barbara and a different vibe to one we've come across before.
Indulging in Local Delights
After working up an appetite from our beach adventures, it was time to indulge in some of the culinary treasures the city has to offer. This trip, we decided to experience our first Indian meal of the holiday, and it did not disappoint! The ice cream parlour also had a visit and we tasted some new flaours.
As the evening sets in (or afternoon in our case), don’t miss out on Santa Barbara’s craft ale scene. With plenty of local breweries nearby and especially around an area called The Funk Zone, there’s nothing quite like sipping on a cold pint while reminiscing about your day. Especially as we have been walking about 5-7 miles a day while here.
Santa Barbara is truly a destination where every moment is worth cherishing. The iconic promenade, the classic wooden piers, the delicious meal, and the gentle hum of train whistles create an unforgettable experience that refreshes the soul. So, if you're looking for a lovely getaway, make sure to add Santa Barbara to your itinerary—you won’t regret it!
