Arriving in Sydney
We can't quite believe we've arrived in Australia. It's somewhere we often thought wed like to visit but due to expense and timing never made it but here we are.
It was a 20 minute walk from the boat to our hotel, we weren't used to pulling the cases and bags so a bit of a struggle when it got hilly but eventually made it, its not really hilly but any slight incline is different to sea level. The city looks nice and we went for a walk to Darling Harbour. Seemed lots happening including a Serbian Festival with the arm in arm dancing on a big stage. A lot of the harbour is modern and a good loop to walk round. Seems lots of museums and galleries if we get any wet days, but otherwise want to stick to seeing what's outside in and around Sydney.
Looking Around, Saving Money
We did a bit of shopping and then back to the hotel and cooked tea. It seemed nice to be able to eat in and have a basic curry rather than the rich food of the last 3 plus weeks! The first meal we've cooked since back at the start of November in Playa Del Carmen, although we did make sandwiches in Easter Island!
We also had a day with no alcohol, we had thought at the end of the cruise we should do that but then decided we'd make the most of the cruise package and wait until we had to buy beer before having a break. I think my carefulness/tightness with money might be becoming a common theme.
I'm free, Captain Peacock
This morning we took a walking tour round Sydney, it was a free one but we did tip at the end! The walk was great, looks a lovely city and the sunshine definitely helps. We saw a decent amount in a 3 hour walk, particularly liked the empty bird cages on Angel Street with the sounds of birds that are no longer found in the city due to urbanisation. We also got some good tips for the next few days. It was big group started with 70 people and then split between two guides, ours was very good giving some funny stories as well as history.
We normally use Guru Walks but in Sydney the I'm Free Walks had better options. Not sure if the name is a nod to Are you Being Served but there were no mention of Mrs Slocombe's cat!
Had an chilled "arvo" and going to eat in again this evening.
