Getting to Montmorency Falls: The Best Transport Option
One of the most efficient ways to reach Montmorency Falls is by taking the 800 public bus, which offers unparalleled advantages over other transport options. Unlike traditional tour buses that often restrict visitors to a tight schedule, limiting their time at these spectacular waterfalls to approximately 45 minutes, the 801 bus provides a far more flexible experience. With regular services throughout the day, they are so easy to catch. We had read online that it was $3 each so we were prepared with $6 - however, the price was $3.75 and they don't give change so we had to part with $10 for the one way. Bugger - this was annoying coming from a very tight Yorkshire women lol. The buses are well suited for tourists as it give clear notice of time to next stop etc - plus google maps also provides a run down of where you are. The falls is the last stop on the route anyhow so you cant go wrong.
Adventure Awaits: Cable Car and Scenic Walks
Visitors to Montmorency Falls are greeted with a myriad of adventurous experiences that cater to all levels of thrill-seekers. You can take the cable car which offers sweeping aerial views of the cascading waters below and the surrounding landscape or you can go down to the bottom using the steps. Not sure how many steps there were but it looked a lot !!!!.
You can take a walk to the bottom of the falls and this allows guests to appreciate the scale and beauty of Montmorency Falls, which stands at an impressive height of 83 meters, making it higher than Niagara Falls. We both felt that it didn't seem as big though but I guess this is because Niagara's overall size with the width seems to be bigger. It was still very impressive and you get just as wet!!
At the top of the falls there are numerous scenic walking paths that wind their way around the area, each offering different vantage points of the falls. A notable option is the suspension bridge that extends over the falls, providing a thrilling opportunity to walk right above the rushing waters. This pathway offers a breath taking view from a unique angle, showing the powerful cascade in all its glory. However, some visitors may choose to observe this exhilarating walk from a distance, as was the case for Karen, who opted to admire the falls from the safety of firm ground. Regardless of your choice, each path around Montmorency Falls is designed to showcase the remarkable natural beauty of the region.
The Culinary Discoveries: From a Closed Restaurant to Hidden Gems
The excitement of dining often accompanies any trip, and sometimes, the best experiences come from unplanned moments. During our exploration, we aimed to visit a highly-rated restaurant renowned for its local cuisine, only to discover upon arrival that this establishment was closed (seems alot of places in Quebec were closed on a Monday - not sure if this is standard). While this initial disappointment was palpable, it paved the way for an unexpected culinary gem.
In the spirit of spontaneity, we decided to wander the charming streets nearby, which led us to a delightful Italian restaurant tucked away from the main path, adorned with vibrant greenery and inviting aromas wafting through the air. This hidden treasure turned out to be a remarkable find. The establishment boasted a warm atmosphere, complete with charming décor and a menu that celebrated authentic Italian flavours. As a bonus we had a chap playing the piano and singing to us. We had a fabulous meal.
Journey to Ottawa: Train Experience and Arrival
Traveling to Ottawa we opted to take the VIA Rail train again. The economy class of VIA Rail is particularly commendable, as it provides significantly more legroom compared to what one typically encounters in airplane or British train seating. This makes for a more relaxed journey, allowing us to stretch their legs and enjoy the views that unfold outside the window.
Arrival to our hotel
A couple of days ago we got an email from the Hotel warning of construction noise. Annoying but hey ho, these things happen. We made the mistake of checking trip advisor and boy the ratings were bad - all 1 star and slating the hotel due to the noise. We'd booked this through Expedia at just over £50 pppn for a 4 star hotel so thought we had got a bargain but it was non-refundable.
When we arrived the guy in front was upgraded to a bigger room on the opposite side of the noise. Our turn came an nope - no upgrade for us but we were given a free glass of wine in the restaurant and promised the noise was only 7am to 7pm.
Yep, bang on 7am it started. pneumatic drills, beeping and every so often loud whistles following by dynamite explosions that actually rocked the building. There is a video of this experience on our facebook page. We gave it an hour then I trotted to the desk and despite the no refund policy they agreed to refund the next two nights so we could relocate (I didnt even have to get too "Karen" on them).
We moved to the Lord Elgin and boy, how nice. Park view and pool/gym to use as well.
Meeting old friends
We met up with old friends from Canada today. A long time ago I had come on holiday to Niagara/USA with an ex and his Aunt/Uncle. Since then I had also kept in touch with their daughter but never met her. Today was a good chance to meet up. I was reminded I had been to visit with them twice - once when we travelled from Niagara to Memphis down the East side of the USA and another time when we flew to Orlando. In my head I had merged these two holidays and thought Id only been over one. Age can addle your brain !!! At least blogs now a days are a good way to record things that happen.
Joan and Vic are well seasoned travellers and have lived in many interesting places around the world. It was good to hear about their escapades and get tips for what we hare planning.
We did have a walk round the city as well, there is a great statue of Oscar Peterson sitting by his piano and as you approach one of his tunes starts playing.....nice.
Last day in Ottawa - guru walk
We had seen a Guru Walk which we like as can tip what we think it is worth. Our guide was a Latvian who spends the summer in Canada and winter back at home. He was a top guide and took us round the city for just over 2 hours. We were the only people on the tour which could have been weird but Ed our guide made us feel comfortable. We felt we got a really good feel for the city and it's history. Ed also gave us lots of ideas for other places to see in Ottawa just a shame we leave in the morning.
We really enjoyed Ottawa. feel it is a great capital city very assured of itself without having to be showy. It seems a laid back town and somewhere else we could happily spend longer.
