Road Sense in Kandy
We had a day in Kandy today and the city roads are manic, lanes don't exist, it's just a free for all. In the countryside nearby thngs aren't much better as really windy roads with massive drops to the side and blind overtaking. It seems tuktuks are everywhere and if cars stop on a narrow part of the road to let each other pass that's the opportunity for about 20 tiktuks to fly through the gap.
The Sacred Tooth Relic
Kandy city itself is loud, smoky and mad. We had a quick walk around before going into the Temple of the Tooth Relic. An interesting place and really it is as the name suggests where a relic of a Buddha's Tooth from the 4th century is kept, so an important place for Buddhists. A bit hassly with people wanting to guide you round and then a fella chatting to us before asking for our WhatsApp number. Not sure if a scam or if we'd get begging requests but we declined and his chatting soon ended. In general Sri Lanka has the most persistent traders we have come across just have to think they're just trying to make a living rather than getting annoyed but sometimes.....
Kandy Lake and Hanthana Hill
We then had a walk round Kandy Lake, the weather was hot and humid again but a decent breeze by the lake was refreshing. Some massive fish in the water and lots of birds, I guess waiting for their dinner!
In the evening the guide took us to Hanthana Hill for the sunset. We went most of the way in his car which was quite scary as narrow roads with a steep drops and big buses passing us. The last bit was off-road and in a jeep, we were just glad we didn't meet anything coming the other way. Definitely worth it as the clouds behaved and we saw a fantastic sunset. At the top of the hill it was just us two, the guide and the 3 lads who are trying to make it a more popular visit for tourists. I think this has been our first real wow moment in Sri Lanka.
