Lorne to Apollo Bay

The real Ocean Road

As we drove along the Ocean Road today, I think we were hit by the brilliance of the scenery and how spectacular the road and area that we are visiting is. At about the same time we were both rating this route as better than Highway One in the US, which we also massively enjoyed but today we felt like stopping at every layby for the views from each lookout.

Happy Clapper

We walked up to the Sheok Waterfall and were lucky with our timing as although due to the dry summer it was more of a trickle than a fall the area was peaceful and we spent a bit of time chilling on our own. Then bizarrely on the way down passed at least 20 people minutes going up! As we were going up we passed a sign warning about fires and snakes, this led to Karen clapping as we walked as she hoped this would scare the snakes. Luckily on the way back she listened to my advice when I said that might not be the best look so was no longer clapping as we passed other people.

Shipwrecked

The rocky coast meant the area has a history of shipwrecks ands there are remembered at some of the lookouts. One we stopped at had a plaque pointing out at low tide you could still see the anchor of the ship which had run aground, after a bit of searching we managed to see it between the waves. We also pulled in a couple of times to walk along surprisingly isolated beaches.

Apollo Bay

In Apollo Bay, the campsite is great with lots going on, a great pitch and a van selling coffee in the morning. There is also a short light show each evening and on Sunday afternoon a live band. As we had spare time, we took our usual coast walk and looked round the town. Again a nice walk in the sunshine it is a nice small town, we looked round a sculptor park before stopping for a drink at the Ocean Road Brewhouse. Then headed back via the supermarket. A bit lazy for tea we bought a cooked chicken and had still warm chicken with rice and bread!
