The Leaving of Port Fairy

A sad morning as we left Port Fairy where we've had a great time, but luckily still a few months to look forward to.

The journey to Robe was quite easy although our longest drive yet at around 300km. Karen did a superb job driving the big rig.

Encounters with Kangaroos and Other Wildlife

We are getting used to dead animals on the side of the road and the signs for their wildlife rescue. We've been told if we hit a kangaroo we need to check if it has a joey in its pouch and if its still alive. If either are still living call the rescue number. If not and they/it is dead then you should put a red X on the animal to show it has been checked! It's more likely the roo will hit you though as they have absolutely no road sense.

A few other interesting sights today, as we drove along saw something ahead which looked like smoke but as we got closer could see they were swarms of insects. We saw lots of these so looked them up on google and saw they are "Red Bugs" apparently perfect conditions for them at the moment

Warning Signs

We also came across a railroad crossing with flashing red lights and alarm sounding. We waited for 5 minutes as per the instructions, but 3 cars coming the other way just drove straight through. By then we had two cars behind us so after consulting with the driver behind we drove through. Karen driving and me checking for trains! A couple of km later we passed a cop car so either lucky not to have been caught or he was going to sort out the faulty warning on the crossing.

Lasts night electric storm was spectacular but speaking to some people today heard that and the lack of rain meant the lightning started some fires. The smoke is visible in the distance.

Our van now has 2 warning lights on, one to say indicators aren't working but they are (??) the other to say no cruise control. If they continue tomorrow we will call the hire company from Adelaide where they have an office. We haven't used cruise control yet but will be useful in the outback.

We used the camp BBQ tonight and had a nice tea, annoyingly the group before us didn't clean up either after cooking or when they had finished their meal. Meaning we cleaned one BBQ so we could use it and then afterwards. They also left the second BBQ they used but we didn’t need filthy. I plan to grass them to reception tomorrow. I followed them back to their vans so know who they are!

At the camp today there was a brochure for the Adelaide Fringe. We're in Adelaide tomorrow and luckily able to get tickets for Ross Noble. We also went for S**faced Shakespeare!
